Interview With Author Jason Johnson
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m an author, coach, and speaker focused on emotional boundaries, self-leadership, and what I call Detrimental Kindness — the hidden pattern of abandoning yourself while trying to be a good person. So far, I’ve written one self-help book, five mindful coloring books, and a guided journal. My work blends personal growth with creativity, helping people reduce stress, reconnect with themselves, and live with more honesty and balance.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Detrimental Kindness. It was inspired by years of noticing how many kind, capable people feel exhausted, resentful, or invisible because they’ve learned to prioritize keeping the peace over speaking the truth. I wanted to give language to something many people experience but struggle to explain — that kindness without boundaries can quietly become self-betrayal.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to write after long walks or deep conversations. Movement helps me think clearly, so many ideas come while I’m walking through a city, traveling, or reflecting on real-life interactions instead of sitting at a desk forcing words.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m influenced by writers and thinkers who explore human behavior honestly and practically — work that blends psychology, lived experience, and personal transformation. I appreciate authors who challenge social conditioning and encourage deeper self-awareness.
What are you working on now?
I’m expanding the Detrimental Kindness concept into new conversations, interviews, and future editions exploring how this pattern shows up in workplaces, relationships, and everyday decision-making. I’m also continuing to create mindful coloring books and wellness-focused creative projects that help people slow down and reconnect with themselves in simple, accessible ways.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that promotion works best when it feels like service, not selling. Sharing honest stories and meaningful conversations connects far more deeply than trying to convince people to buy something.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that promotion works best when it feels like service, not selling. Sharing honest stories and meaningful conversations connects far more deeply than trying to convince people to buy something.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
You can love people without abandoning yourself.
What are you reading now?
Right now I’m reading Poor Economics, along with books focused on psychology, personal growth, emotional health, and human behavior. I’m drawn to work that helps explain why people make the decisions they do and how systems and mindset shape everyday life.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Continuing to grow the Detrimental Kindness message through books, conversations, and live experiences while expanding creative wellness projects like mindful coloring books and journals that support reflection, stress relief, and emotional balance.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
A book that explores human nature and meaning — something reflective rather than purely entertaining — because understanding ourselves is a lifelong journey no matter where we are.
