Interview With Author Jayne Jaudon Ferrer
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m the author of seven books: five collections of poetry, a nonfiction book about games, and a novel. I’m also the host and editor of www.YourDailyPoem.com. I wrote my first story at 6, published my first story at 9, and haven’t stopped since. I live in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains and enjoy gardening, good conversation, and old movies.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I wrote HAYLEY AND THE HOT FLASHES because I was frustrated by how few books there seem to be about successful middle-aged women. Because I spent a lot of time in Nashville in my teens and twenties, I thought the world of country music would be a fun place to explore with my characters–and it was!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
One of my favorite places to write is in the woods overlooking the goat pasture at Carl Sandburg’s estate in Flat Rock, North Carolina. The home is now a National Historic Site, with beautiful wooded trails and rolling green pastures and, of course, those friendly goats. I find it wonderfully inspiring!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Louisa May Alcott and Helen Keller were my childhood heroines; Louisa, in particular, fueled my love of words. Robert Louis Stevenson and, later, Rod McKuen planted the seeds for my love of poetry
What are you working on now?
I’m editing and polishing several children’s book manuscripts, a Christmas story, and another novel manuscript about two middle-aged sisters who end up with a Ferris wheel in their back yard.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I keep my website updated, www.JayneJaudonFerrer.com, and send out a newsletter whenever I have something interesting to share or an event coming up.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t let rejection discourage you, and don’t be lazy. Research and editing are vital elements of success, so even if you’re not actively writing, there is always work to be done.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
From my sister: “Done is better than perfect.”
What are you reading now?
Louisa May Alcott’s Christmas Treasury
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m pondering the idea of turning my novel into a stage or screen play.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, a dictionary, something by Robert Louis Stevenson, and something by Sean Dietrich
