Interview With Author Jean Guthrie
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Reared on a beef and dairy farm in Virginia, I have an undergraduate degree in Dairy Science and a master’s in mass communications. That gives me the unique capacity to converse with large herds of cattle.
Seriously, I’ve written a series of two middle-grade science fiction / fantasy novels:
1) Mystical Aria: Seeking the Gallion Queen
2) Mystical Aria: Starship Diary
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I was inspired to write “Mystical Aria: Starship Diary” by the number of people who told me that they enjoyed reading Aria Vanir’s diary entries in the first book of the series. The sequel contains numerous diary entries and interviews that Aria conducts with members of the alien royal family or starship crew.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
My first drafts are handwritten in cursive on unlined paper. A connection flows from within me through the pen that doesn’t happen when I type. I scribble edits and ideas on the unlined paper as well. When I’m ready, I start the editing process by typing or dictating into my laptop.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Thirty-some years ago, Richard Bach’s “Illusions” influenced me to ponder the world beyond what I see with my eyes. Recently, I listened to “Pure Human” by Gregg Braden. I’m amazed by his understanding of our Divine connection.
What are you working on now?
The third book of “Mystical Aria” series.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Meeting kids in person or networking with adults who teach children. For example, I gave a presentation to the entire 8th grade at my hometown middle schools.
I enjoy writing inspirational poems or messages for my newsletters.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write what makes you emotional.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
To write fast, bypassing the logical mind.
What are you reading now?
Outrageous Openness by Tosha Silver
What’s next for you as a writer?
I might start another children’s science fiction / fantasy series.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
1. How to survive being stranded on a desert island
2. Gnostic Gospels
3. Rumi poetry
