Interview With Author Jen Esparza
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I own a marketing agency and I’ve written two books on marketing, Marketing Basics for Your Small Business and Marketing Basics for Nonprofits. These two groups are important to me because I love being able to help a passionate leader tell their story and raise awareness about what they do.
I also have a hard drive full of written children’s books and half-finished novels. I will get around to publishing those someday!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book, Marketing Basics for Nonprofits is pretty self explanatory! I think it’s important to name your non-fiction books with clarity so readers don’t have to guess what it might be about.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write best in large blocks of time. I have a cute little historic hotel that I go to for self-led weekend writing retreats. I get so much done!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I hate to be unoriginal but I love James Clear’s Atomic Habits. I love his writing style and his content has really helped me create better habits around work, writing, etc.
What are you working on now?
I just launched my second book so I am still very much in promotion mode. But I do have a third book simmering in my brain and I cannot wait to get it out! I’m also developing courses to help people get more hands on learning, so look for that early 2025.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have worked hard at building a community, social following and email list, so that I had the right audience ready to promote to when my books released. That has been the most effective promotion for me.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just keep writing! The publishing process can feel overwhelming but there is nothing like seeing your name on a book and reading reviews of how you’ve helped people. It’s all so very worth it!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice has been, Just Live. This was in response to getting wrapped up in buying a new home, planning the remodel, stressing over superfluous things. In reality nobody cares about the colors of your walls, they just want to be invited over. Your kids don’t care what kind of car you buy, they just want to spend time with you. “Just live” is the best advice to keep life simple and just enjoy the moment.
What are you reading now?
What am I NOT reading? I read a lot of fiction and right now I’m in The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. I love anything with a little hint of the unexplainable. I save fiction for before bed and tend to read/listen to personal development books in the car, on walks, etc. Right now I am finishing Unhackable and it’s been incredible.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I would love more opportunities to speak to groups at conferences, meetings, etc. to educate more people how to effectively market their organization. Know of an opportunity? Contact me please!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, Atomic Habits, and something by Sarah Addison Allen.
