Interview With Author Jeremy Rafuse
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am originally from Canada and now live in Paris, France, where I am completing my PhD in philosophy.
I have written lots of screenplays and received numerous nominations at festivals.
I recently published my first novel titled 280 with Blossom Spring Publishing.
My second novel, titled The Red Zone Speeches, is coming out in Spring 2025.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is titled 280.
It is an international heist story. It follows two main characters, Marco and Hana. The couple falls in love after they meet to take part in the heist.
It turns out they both come from crime families.
The story tries to navigate that their criminals and that they want to live normal lives.
There is also a second narrative voice, a crime syndicate, which has written a book and offers advice to wannabe criminals.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write in the mornings. Usually for a couple of hours at the most.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I like all sorts of books, from novels to philosophy.
I like lots of different genres of American literature, like the Beat generation to Hemingway and Cormac McCarthy.
I also like lots of Canadian writers, like Brian Moore and Mordecai Richler.
What are you working on now?
Right now I am working on a long novel, which I hope to get finished before the summer. Fingers crossed.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My publisher’s website is a great place to start. It gives you an author profile, plus information about books that I have written.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
The best advice is to never give up. And always try and write a little bit every day.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Trust in yourself.
What are you reading now?
I am currently reading Normal People by Sally Rooney.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I am working on a novel. And I have lots of academic work I am working on too.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would probably take some philosophy, like Plato’s Republic.
And maybe some other Sally Rooney books.
