Interview With Author Jess Barrett
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m Jess. I’m an ordained interfaith minister, wise woman, community chaplain, mother, artist, author, and lifelong seeker. I’ve written three books, and I’ve just published the 10 year anniversary of my first one, Can Spiritual Women Say F#ck?
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Can Spiritual Women Say F#ck, 10th Anniversary Edition. The first edition was inspired by my… let’s say “bumpy” spiritual journey. I wanted to help people with the things I’d learned the hard way so they didn’t have to find out that way! This 10th anniversary edition was inspired by the way that book has fueled my growth and the growth of so many people I love and have worked with over the years. I wanted to give it a tune-up to reflect the massive growth I’ve seen.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write in fits and spurts, when I’m most inspired. I also have to set deadlines for myself so that I can wait until the last minute to meet them.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have been so inspired by so many books! Right now my favorites are Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer and Rest is Resistance by Tricia Hersey.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on a series about ancestral healing and faith reclamation. I’m excited to bring tools and resources to people who are reconstructing their faith.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have a great community that supports me and spreads the word!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Trust yourself!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
To trust myself!
What are you reading now?
I’m 2/3 of the way through Rest is Resistance by Tricia Hersey, and only one chapter away from finishing Abuelita Faith by Kat Armas. 10/10 recommend.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m looking for opportunities to speak and share my message broadly, and I’m working on my next book, and I’m raising my baby. That keeps my hands pretty full!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein, Journey to the Dark Goddess by Jane Meredith, Jailbreaking the Goddess by Lasara Allen Firefox, and Devotions by Mary Oliver.
