Interview With Author Jessie Winterspring
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
About me… haha, well, I started writing under my real name Jessica E. Larsen, back in 2007. I published my first book in 2013.
A local publisher in the Philippines published the first two books of my Filipino series, A FRENCH FAIRYFAIL, back in 2014. When they closed down, I published the rest of the series. I learned how hard it was to be my own publisher… the expenses are no joke. Good thing that my job for over fifteen years as an assistant designer made me able to design my own covers.
Marketing was annoying and makes it even more painful when I have this 'meh' feeling over my name.
By 2019 I've written 9 novels under my name, seven of which are in Filipino, two novella's in English. I was also working with IN ANOTHER TIME, my time-travel romance, which was actually my very first book idea back in 2006. It stayed in my head my head through the years, even though I never write a single note of it.
I wrote "IN ANOTHER TIME" for NaNoWriMo 2019 and finished the first draft in January 2020, revising it for NaNoWriMo that same year. It's also in 2020 that I decided to have a penname. I want to rebrand myself for IN ANOTHER TIME "my first book" and all my future English stories and that's when Jessie Winterspring was born.
Jessie is what some friends called me, and I coined Winterspring from the seasons. I was born in Winter and my husband was in Spring so it's perfect in my opinion.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Die for Me. This is a short story about reincarnation. What inspired me to write it is the ending of the first story, which I intended to be a standalone. Webtoons reincarnation stories were also part of my inspiration because I've been reading so much of them. They're addicting, I spend more time binge-reading them than writing.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to put my hair up. Stretch. Look in the refrigerator for anything I can reward myself if I can sit down and write for at least an hour straight. I also put my phone in silent and away from me.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I'm not sure, to be honest. I think I'm influence by so many, but also no one in particular. I think every book I've read through the years (good and bad) influenced me.
What are you working on now?
I'm currently going through the editing of the 4th editors of IN ANOTHER TIME, while writing another time travel romance, JUST IN TIME. It's the second book of IN ANOTHER TIME.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Blogging and Instagram, and looking for affordable marketing sites.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don't listen to your inner editor so much. Ignore the impostor syndrome. Only think of how good it will feel when you finished that book. Also, if you think you're not made for writing, stay away from it because if you're a true writer, you won't be able to resist. You will return to writing sooner or later.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If you think you're not made for writing, stay away from it because if you're a true writer, you won't be able to resist. You will return to writing sooner or later.
What are you reading now?
I'm a mood reader so I have 29 current reads in Goodreads and about a hundred webtoons in my bookmark. My latest new current read is Trafficked Girl.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Write the next book, finish it, repeat.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I'll bring my phone and my kindle, that way I have a lot of books to read haha… print book, however, ugh, I don't know.
