Interview With Author Jill Thomas
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Jill grew up in a small town in Oregon. Growing up in the country and being surrounded by a plethora of animals provided her with lots of inspiration for her books. The Pollywog Adventures is a mystery series for children, ages 6-11. Tucker’s Lost Gold is book one in the series. So far, it has been well received by readers.
Jill currently resides in Southern California with her husband, two sons, two lively dogs, and horses. Living in such a vibrant and diverse location has offered her further inspiration for her storytelling. Her childhood experiences and passion for the outdoors have influenced her work, making her books engaging and relate well to children, as well as adults.
Jill is an avid equestrian and has been riding horses for most of her life. Her passion for horses might reflect in her books, adding an authentic touch to the adventures and experiences her characters encounter.
Spending time with family is of utmost importance to Jill and she cherishes every moment. Her sons have taught her the most valuable lesson of all – to never forget her inner child.
Jill recently completed book 2 in The Pollywog Adventure series, scheduled for release in fall 2023. She is at work on the 3rd book.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Tucker’s Lost Gold. Growing up in the country and playing outdoors as a child adventuring is what led to the story concept.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I think my writing habit is very common to what many other writers do. When a phrase, a character, a place, a plot, or a word that I like comes into my mind I quickly jot it down on a post-it note, which I usually have near me at all times. I have post-it notes stuck all over my house.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I loved Jack London and devoured his books as a child. I also loved Beverly Clearly.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently writing on the 3rd book in my children’s series.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use my personal website to promote my books, social media, and of course, sites like Awesome Gang to help get the word out.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Try not to get discouraged. Discouragement can be the biggest hurdle for writers. Most writers give up their dream of becoming an author because they gave into discouragement.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Recently I listened to a well respected and successful author who said, “Go low and go slow. Writing is about the long game.”
What are you reading now?
What Remains by Carole Radziwill
What’s next for you as a writer?
To keep developing my children’s series.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
1. What Remains
2. The Bone Garden
3. Separate Beds
