Interview With Author John Avery
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have been a follower of Jesus for fifty years. I love to hike and cross-country ski. In the last twenty years I have been writing devotionals. It began with my first book, a Bible Study about the names of God called The Name Quest.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Welcoming the Spirit of God . . . to Fill and Overflow Your Life.
I get inspiration as I read the Bible or listen to messages or to what ordinary people say. I never write without inspiration and checking against Scripture and good commentaries. I never write to deadlines or rush a compilation; I wait until they are complete before beginning the process of editing, formatting, and publishing.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
CS Lewis, John Stott, Dallas Willard, John Mark Comer. Many more.
What are you working on now?
Mystery in the Bible: Reflections on the use of the word “mystery’ in the Bible (April 13, 2026).
So This Is Paradise: Life-Changing Truths Wrapped in Light-Hearted Fiction (Coming perhaps in June, 2026).
Lots of research for a set of devotionals about prayer. All these will be part of The Sparks Series.

Get into a critique group.

Write, write, write

What’s next for you as a writer?
Filling out The Sparks Series with more compilations of my devotionals.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible and some long ones like War and Peace and The Count of Monte Cristo.
