Interview With Author John Carney
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a new author recovering from colon cancer. I’ve written 2 books. The first is a short Sci Fi story called “The Battle Of Greenfield.” The latest title is “Intestinal Fortitude: A Tale Of Early Onset Colon Cancer.” As of January 5, 2026, “Intestinal Fortitude” is the #1 New Release in Colon Cancer.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The latest title is “Intestinal Fortitude: A Tale Of Early Onset Colon Cancer.” As the title suggests, it’s my colon cancer story. My experience has been a unique roller coaster that my mother encouraged me to tell the world about.
1 in 3 Americans will have cancer at some point in their lives. Some serious, some not. Despite how many cancer patients of all kinds are always around us, the general public acts as if it has little clue about what cancer patterns deal with. I’m hoping this book helps to change that.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t think so. I think I’m a bit old-school in that I write without regard to structure to get all my ideas on paper. I then go back over and over and over and over again and edit and edit and edit.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Tom Robbins and Douglas Adams showed me what ‘imagination” can mean. Singer/Lyricist Eddie Vedder showed me the power and possibility of using few words to paint vivid pictures.
What are you working on now?
Selling “Intestinal Fortitude” and trying to keep cancer from turning our lives into a total disaster. Learning how to use ai to assist my marketing and to level up my 51 year old man skills.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
So far it has been social media, but I don’t have much else to lean on at the moment.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write the book. Get it done. Make it great. Everything else follows that.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I really don’t know.
What are you reading now?
A lot of information about digital marketing and how to build ai apps to assist me in this. I have become much more single-minded and unable to juggle multiple tasks with any sensibility. I tend to focus on one thing to the detriment of all else. My pleasure reading has been mainly cosmology and astrophysics news. I’ve always been a science guy.
What’s next for you as a writer?
No idea. I need to sell the book I just released. I may try writing children’s story about a paralyzed raccoon who I feed. I admire him.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would bring the best books written about surviving on a desert island that I can find. Louisa May Alcott won’t teach me how to roast a scorpion.
