Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is John Dover. I have written two novella’s, a four part comic book series, and a number of short stories that have all been published in various horror anthologies. My novella’s are a series around my main character, Johnny Scotch. My jazz-noir adventure series is published by Breaking Rules Publishing with a third book due out in 2020.
I also have a horror book that was recently picked up by Not A Pipe Publishing and it will be due out in 2021.
One other book that is due out this year is a trumpet method book I just finished. The Intentional Trumpeter will be available in mid January.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My most recent book is “A Song for Charlie”. It is part of my Johnny Scotch series and follows the jazz-noir adventures of Johnny Scotch as he deals with the loss of a client and finds out his most recent client is more than they seem to be.
Johnny Was inspired by my life and adventures on the road as a professional musician.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I love to write in bars and coffee shops. Not that unusual, but the din of the busy room helps me to focus and sometimes gain inspiration for characters and scenes.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Raymond Chandler, Tana French, Christopher Moore, Lee Child, Dashiel Hammet, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, JK Rowling (especially her pen name, Robert Galbraith), and Walter Mosley are my top influences for sure.
What are you working on now?
I am editing the third book in the Johnny Scotch series and I will begin editing my horror book for Not a Pipe Publishing in the Spring/Summer.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I love doing readings/signings. I find that being in front of someone is the best way for me to convince them to pick up a copy of what I am writing. I also love doing conventions.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write even when it isn’t good. Put the pen to paper so you have something to work with later.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write hard and fast and edit slow and careful.
What are you reading now?
No current books in my rotation just because the holiday season was so busy with my music career.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Finishing up the two current books and promoting the trumpet method book are my most immediate goals. After that, I have a book that is about 2/3 done that I would like to revisit. A bit of a supernatural romance adventure.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
To Kill A Mockingbird
The Collected Works of Edgar Allen Poe
Devil in a Blue Dress
