Interview With Author John Russell
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m John Russell, the best-selling and multi-award-winning author of these nonfiction books about the paranormal: Riding with Ghosts, Angels, and the Spirits of the Dead — A Knock in the Attic — and 20 Ways to Increase Your Psychic Abilities. My fourth book, The Crying Tree and the Magic Rock, is finished and will be published in 2024, and I’m writing on my fifth book now, The Can Sack Ghost.
I’ve been a professional psychic for 50 years. Internationally known, I’ve provided psychic readings for clients in over 40 countries, and I still read full-time for a worldwide clientele. I’ve been a paranormal researcher and investigator since age 11 and I’ve experienced over 1,000 paranormal manifestations. In addition I am also a UFO experiencer. I am a popular featured guest on radio and podcasts worldwide, having appeared nine times to date on Coast to Coast AM with George Noory, and having been interviewed on over 100 different stations and podcasts with over 150 interviews recorded to date.
In my books I write about the decades of mind-blowing paranormal events I’ve experienced across the years and what they’ve taught me, passing that information on to you in stories that are as entertaining as they are informative. In my books I’ll tell you what it was like to be filmed for a TV pilot for The History Channel while I psychically investigated the assassination of President Lincoln; discover with me what it was like to meet world-famous psychic Uri Geller; I’ll share my incredible UFO experiences, including meeting an eyewitness to the Roswell UFO crash; come hiking with me through the haunted woods of Hontoon Island, home of the People of the Owl, where I encountered spirits who saved my life; I’ll tell you about the time I may have made a phone call…to a ghost; and then, what was that knocking in the attic? Enjoy incredible true stories about guardian angels, items that mysteriously appeared and disappeared, civil war ghosts I encountered during a paranormal investigation, beloved pets that returned from the dead for cherished visits, and much, much more.
My books have been endorsed by Uri Geller; George Noory; Phyllis Galde; Mike Ricksecker; Kat Hobson; Martha Lawrence; Cristina Gomez; Jim Mullen; Adrian Calabrese; and more, and they have received many favorable editorial and reader reviews.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“20 Ways to Increase Your Psychic Abilities.”
Over the years my clients have repeatedly asked me what they can do to increase their own spiritual understanding and grow their psychic prowess. Their repeated requests for advice was the prompt to write this book.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to spell-check and edit as I write. When my manuscript is finished it gets one final spell-check and one final read through before it goes to the publisher.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
The list is too long and varied to write!
What are you working on now?
My fourth book is complete: “The Crying Tree and the Magic Rock.”
Now I’m working on my fifth book: “The Can Sack Ghosts.”
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I utilize a variety of means to promote my books, including posting links to their pages on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, etc. I also maintain a dedicated author’s website, and additionally each of my books has its own page with endorsements, awards won, reviews, etc.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Develop a thick skin: learn to face down repeated rejections, believe in yourself and your work, and keep writing and keep submitting. Ignore “critics” who only have an ax to grind and like to put others down in order to feel superior. Prepare to invest time, effort, energy, and money into promoting yourself and your published books. And keep on writing!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
That the muse shows up when you do. Sit down every day and write. Put in the work of a writer.
What are you reading now?
“Travels Through Time” by Mike Ricksecker.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I will continue to write nonfiction books about the paranormal, but I have some novels planned as well.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Mine, to remind me of the wonderful adventures and experiences I’ve had in my lifetime.
