Interview With Author Jonathan Faia
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am an indie writer who has released two books titled, Wylde Serenity and the second is, Love Letters From Barstow. I love the classics, Hemmingway, Vonnegut, and Kerouac. There are heavy influences of Beat Poetry in all my works. I also dabble in music when I can and I love spending time in bookstores. There is nothing better than when you find a book full of tabs and notes where the previous owner felt connected.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The title of my latest book is, Love Letters From Barstow. It is a 116 page book of poems that delves into love and loss. Some points brilliant with love, while others dark in respect to losing love. The title was inspired by the long lonely road from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. The city of Barstow lies in the middle and is filled with revelry on the way to your destination and then disappointment and loneliness on the long road home.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to write on everything. I’ve been know to make notes on napkins at a restaurant or a receipt from a grocery trip. It makes it very difficult to coordinate when it comes time to put pen to paper. My writing area is full of shoe boxes with scattered notes. If there was one thing I’d like to improve it would be organization.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m heavily influenced by all the Beat Poets. Particularly Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. Kerouac’s, On The Road was a coming of age book for me and when I heard Allen Ginsberg recite his poem America it just resonated with me. Hermann Hesse is another big influence on me not always in my writing style, but books like Siddhartha really changed my life at 18.
What are you working on now?
In addition to my books, I also do freelance writing for many websites where I interview other artists including writers, musicians and anyone that creates.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I like Goodreads.com because it’s really a community of readers. It’s made up of people who are passionate about reading, which really gives great perspective when it comes to finding new works.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
The content of the book is priority, and it’s a part of you but don’t overlook the marketing aspect. Have an idea of how you would like to market and explore what a plan might look like. You’ll find that there are a lot of people looking to take advantage of authors and the need for exposure. Talk with your publisher prior to the book release and explore the promotional options.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
It sounds cliché but really, don’t compromise on your vision. In most cases you’ve worked a lifetime and put your being in your work. Don’t be dragged down if big companies pass on your work at first. Stay at it.
What are you reading now?
I just purchased, The Things I Didn’t Say In Therapy by author Logan Duane. I found it in a used bookshop and I’m excited to read it.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m continuing to promote my latest book, Love Letters From Barstow. I enjoy participating in local events to promote books.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
