Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hello! I’m Jordan Crestwood. I am a fiction author from the southeast United States. I have published one book to date, but I have 4 others in the works at the moment, in various stages of completion. I have written a few indie scripts (under another name) and I very much enjoy the art of storytelling in all its forms, whether written, audio, or video. Being allowed to bring another person into the worlds we see in our heads really is a unique privilege!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my latest book is “Within the Flame: After the Fall Book 1”. It was inspired by my love of both martial arts and survival/bushcraft training. I began writing this series while working on another book and this really grew to take on a life of its own.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I use this cruddy PDF audio reader on my phone to read my books back to me in a creepy robot voice. This helps me pick out typos and other issues for editing. Something about hearing it read to me works a different part of my brain than reading it with my eyes.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Robert Jordan is one of my first and biggest influences. Brandon Sanderson, George R.R. Martin, and of course Tolkien have all been inspirations throughout the years.
What are you working on now?
I am working on Book 2 of After the Fall now, as well as pecking away at another novel that stands apart from the After the Fall series. For now, however, After the Fall gets the most attention.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
So far, Booksends has been a great one for me. I have seen the most bump up from them. Amazon advertising has worked fairly well, but I am very new to the advertising game, so I’m still working to wrap my head around what to do and not to do.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Being a new author myself, I would say just write! Write write write. (And read read read). Never let yourself become stuck in your ways; grow and adapt and improve as you write. Learn what works and what doesn’t. Fear is the biggest limiter. Just jump past that fear and DO SOMETHING and you will find your feet.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
To cut my work with a butcher’s cleaver. I had certain descriptors and story elements that I clung to for a very long time. But when preparing for publication, I had to learn to cut what doesn’t already serve the story.
What are you reading now?
Lords of the Sky by Angus Wells. Almost finished with it! I’ve enjoyed it so far!
What’s next for you as a writer?
I will be finishing my edits on After the Fall Book 2 and getting that publication process started!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Surviving on a Desert Island 101 (haha), “The Shadow Rising” by Robert Jordan, “Warbreaker” by Brandon Sanderson, and a family photo album.
