About Jordy, Bounce, and Lilli
Six-year-old Lilli had the unyielding passion of building her own raft, taking it to sea, and one day becoming a sea captain. For a kid growing up during the post-WWII 50s, where other kids were content with their once-a-month Dairy Queen custard, their father’s “new” four-year-old Chevy, a slice of Nino’s pizza, snowball fights and snowman building, fishing at Brady’s Pond, reruns of King Kong, hopscotch, and dolls, Lilli needed to go to sea.
Buddies, linked together from the first day of kindergarten, Jordy and Lilli are two young children growing up during this nurturing era. … “The real America,” one might say. It was a time when young people could begin to venture beyond the conventional constraints of the century’s first fifty years. But still, no one, especially a little girl, had dreams as lofty as Lilli’s. Her bonded yet unassuming friendship with Jordy, her neighbor and favorite classmate, and the comfort supplied by Bounce, the stray cat who adopted them both, exemplifies the simplicity of the times and the strength and possibilities that simplicity can bring.
