Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I wrote my first story at the age of six, but didn’t really get into writing until about the age of twelve. Was a founding member of my high school’s Creative Writing Club. Self-published my first novel in 2013 and it’s sequel in 2015. Was subsequently picked up by Burning Willow Press in 2016. Have also had several short stories published in numerous anthologies. Currently working on the third book in my series, as well as several other works.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Starhawk Chronicles: Rest and Wreck-reation is the second book in my Starhawk Chronicles series. I wanted to take my characters, a team of bounty hunters, in a different direction from their first book, so I basically sent them on vacation. Chaos ensues. It was a hell of a fun book to write.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Cannot write unless I have music playing, usually film scores by John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, etc.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I grew up reading Mark Twain. I enjoy authors from many different genres. Dean Koontz, Clive Cussler, JRR Tolkien, Timothy Zahn, Arthur C. Clark…the list goes on and on.
What are you working on now?
I have several projects going on at once. The third book in The Starhawk Chronicles series, plus a few spin-off/stand-alone works.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I try to cover as much social media as possible. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and MeWe are all on that list, though I find Facebook has the greatest range.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t give up. It’s incredibly hard to break into this business. I suffered through years of rejections from both agents and publishers before going the self-published route. Ironically, it was after being self-pubbed that I found a publisher interested in dealing with me. Persistence is key. And never stop writing, no matter how discouraged you may get.
What are you reading now?
Walt Disney: An American Original by Bob Thomas. Every time I need a creative pick-me-up I read this. Walt is my idol, and his story is truly inspirational.
What’s next for you as a writer?
To just keep writing and publishing.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The aforementioned, Walt Disney bio. My collected works of Mark Twain. Timothy Zahn’s Heir To The Empire trilogy
