Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I live in Las Vegas, NV with my husband, and our long-haired Chihuahua. I began writing short stories for a writer’s group. One of those stories turned in to novel. Then I got the bug. I went on to write seven full length novels, all set in small towns, and most with a sprinkling of suspense. I like to write villains you love to hate, but I give them an endearing quality. My heroines all undergo major changes in their lives.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
VICTORIA. I wrote OLIVIA, the first of the REXFORD series. Victoria, was the trouble-maker in that book and it seemed natural to give her a life-changing moment. I read in the newspaper about the problems with drugs and thought “what if?” What if Victoria innocently became involved with drugs? What if she fell in love with a man with a shady reputation who was really an undercover narcotic agent? What kind of trouble can I give Victoria? The story took off from there.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write everything I can think of in my first draft. I do an interview with each of my characters to dig into their personalities. By the time I’m done, I know their likes and dislikes, bad habits, and what frightens them. I also keep a notebook and write down a synopsis of each chapter as I write.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
My very favorite book as a child was Gulliver’s Travels, by Jonathan Swift.
I loved Maeve Binchy, and have read all of her books. Debbie Macomber is another role model.
What are you working on now?
JADE, the third of the REXFORD series. ROBYN is next, and I’ve plotted KRISTEN.
I also write two blogs and still write short stories.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m new at marketing. I have a facebook author page. https://www.facebook.com/joycewritesromance/ I place my book information on 150+ sites on facebook and exchange interviews on fellow writer’s blogs.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read. Read. Read. Get an idea of how other authors in your genre write. Show, don’t tell. Make sure your readers identify with your characters. Join writing groups in your area or online. Join a critique group.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write something everyday. Read your work aloud.
What are you reading now?
I’m reading historical romances, mainly western.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I hope to learn more about marketing, and online media. I also have several book ideas in my file. I can’t wait to get started.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The BIBLE. It contains a bit every genre. Any of Maeve Binchy’s books. Something from Agatha Christie.
