Interview With Author JP Rindfleisch IX
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m JP, a writer of things dark, strange, and queer with over seven books published within the queer fiction, dark paranormal academy, and paranormal humor genres. I am also an editor and occasional podcast host over at the dialogue doctor, which is a space for writers to help improve their craft and dialogue. Last, I do productivity live streams over on Twitch, where I write and work on author related things.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I just finished up a short story submission of a cerebral queer sci fi to be published in an anthology called Stories of First Contact. This was brought about when I joined the Write Team, which is a team of writers who stream on Twitch. As a productivity streamer, forging a space for other writers and task oriented people, I was thrilled to be able to join the team and be a part of this anthology. The story is inspired by the movie Arrival, which was an adaptation of the 1998 short story “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang, but with a queer take on it.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Writing while streaming seems to have become the best way for me to maintain focus and accountability. So, yeah, wearing the occasional onesie while on cam is fairly unusual.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Neil Gaiman, TJ Klune, Tamora Pierce, and Garth Nix are big influences of mine. All of their abilities to craft strange and magical worlds with a spec of whimsy have really helped me to find my voice.
What are you working on now?
I am currently publishing an ongoing serial called Mosswood Apothecary, which is a cozy queer fantasy adventure inspired by my love of Studio Ghibli films, Full Metal Alchemist, and the joy and heart of Schitt’s Creek.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Ha! Tossing in everything but the kitchen sink? I have found some use in services through Written Word Media and also some mild success through TikTok, but the most success I’ve had is consistency in posting and being present.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
“Fix it in post” is so important. Nearly no one’s first words they write are the words that end up published. Even now, these aren’t my first words on this answer. Famous masterpieces have sketches and sections painted over, but when we only see the masterpiece, we forget all the bits that came before. If you can spill out the story, from start to finish onto the page, then you have something tangible to work with and mold into the work you wish to present.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
While interviewing Hugh Howey, he once talked about how he asks a simple question about his characters before writing them, “what’s in their pockets?” This question sticks with me because it is so easy to remember and so easy to forget that our characters have lived lives before and after they are on the page. They don’t just appear the moment we need them. They have a history and a life that if we can drill down into something as simple as knowing what they carry in their pockets, then we can know how they show up on the page.
What are you reading now?
Awakening in Sapphire by Jonathan Hawker
What’s next for you as a writer?
Serials! I have been loving writing serial fiction, so I plan to keep writing them. I’ve got Mandrake Manor 2 coming next.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, Lireal by Garth Nix, Wolfsong by TJ Klune, and Probably some survival guide…I guess
