Interview With Author Juan Carlos Hoyos
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a full time professional writer (Spanish) and have written more than 20 books, but I also write movie scripts (more than 10), and work as a transmedial artist.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
New Arts, Eighth and Ninth, is my favorite non-fiction book. The first inspiration came back in 1990, in a very magical and unexpected way, diving my head into the pillow, it all fell in place, but that is just a little piece of the essay. The rest came with effort, working as an artist, and teaching new art language at Javeriana University in Bogotá. A very slow process that took me 25 years.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really, I write as a professional, and I believe in inspiration, but it must hit you while you are working. As it is said: 1% of inspiration and 99% of transpiration.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have been a non-stop reader, and I studied literature, so my influences come from everywhere. But, I could say that after the years I prefer satyrical literature and love authors like Swift, Voltaire, and even Nietzsche.
What are you working on now?
Now I am writing movie scripts. At this moment my tenth script, one about a very special colombian female politician that run for presidente and is named in Wikipedia as the mayor witch.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Publishing is the first step in promotion and the first week books receive special treatment and visibility. I really like what Draft2digital does for indie authors.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Yes, please DO NOT BECOME A WRITER, the world does not pay for it.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Carpe diem
What are you reading now?
Two books: Bertrand`s Russell book on Humans Knowledge And reading, again, Nietzsche, a book about moral (Aurora, in spanish).
What’s next for you as a writer?
I have different projects, but I think "MY TINY 8X8 KINGDOM" a kids book of chess may be the next.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, because you can never finish reading it. A big and old Atlas (if I am not having google earth). And a DIY book on how to survive alone in a desert island.
