Interview With Author K. S. Gerlt
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am just starting my author career, with The Werewolf’s Mask being my debut novel! I have always been an avid reader, and can’t even tell you how many thousands of books I’ve read over the years. My favorite genres are fantasy, romance, paranormal romance, and action and adventure. When I’m not writing, working, or working, I’m most likely ice skating, riding a horse, or painting.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My debut novel, The Werewolf’s Mask, was originally inspired by the tale of the Man in the Iron Mask, which I first heard when I studied abroad in France. I had the opportunity to tour the prison on the island where the masked man was held. That’s when I got the inkling of the book concept, and I just added some werewolves and developed it from there!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
If preferring to write while in a cafe with a pastry in front of me, or at home with candle lit next to me count, then yes!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Too many to count! If I had to pick a few, I’d say Karen Lynch, Cheree Alsop, and of course Sarah J. Maas have given me loads of inspiration.
What are you working on now?
I am currently working on the sequel to The Werewolf’s Mask, which I’m tentatively calling Daughter of Wind and Moonlight. It is currently available as a pre-order on Amazon.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
That is something I am still discovering, so for now, I am going to see email newsletters and friends on Instagram.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice for new authors would be to just start writing, and find a supportive friend who will help keep you accountable. There’s a lot to learn when it comes to publishing, but that’s part of the fun!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
To fail faster. Not everything you try will be an immediate success, or even a success at all. So I think it’s best to give every project a fair shot, and if something doesn’t work, learn from it and move forward.
What are you reading now?
I am currently reading Namesake by Adrienne Young. Her writing and descriptions are beautiful!
What’s next for you as a writer?
Once I have finished book 2 in The Werewolf’s Mask series, I am considering writing several spin-offs. After that, it’s on to one of my other two dozen book ideas.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Well practically speaking, I would want to take some survival guides with me. If survival wasn’t an issue, I’d take the Relentless series by Karen Lynch.
