Interview With Author Kailey Oliver
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve been immersed in the world of writing since my early years, exploring various forms of creative expression. Over the course of my journey, I’ve written numerous short stories and poems, some of which have been recognized and found their way into the pages of prestigious magazines. In 2020, I proudly released my debut book of poetry.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The title of my most recent book is “World Stained Us System Blamed Us.” This book was inspired by a deep exploration of societal issues and the complex interplay between individuals and the systems they are a part of.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes, I do have a few unique writing habits. One of them is writing by the water, whether it’s beside a serene lake or even at the beach. The sound of water has always been quite inspiring for me. I also tend to be most productive during the early hours of the morning when the world is still quiet and peaceful, or during late-night sessions when the world is asleep, and my thoughts flow freely. These moments of solitude and natural inspiration often lead to some of my most creative work.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Certainly, my writing has been influenced by a diverse group of thinkers and authors, including:
Rumi: For his profound mystical poetry and spiritual insights.
Maya Angelou: Her autobiographical works and powerful storytelling.
Philosophers: Nietzsche, Sartre, and Camus for their existentialist ideas.
Virginia Woolf: Her innovative narrative techniques.
Walt Whitman: His celebration of individuality and interconnectedness.
Albert Einstein: His thoughts on creativity and interdisciplinary thinking.
Aldous Huxley: His exploration of societal and ethical issues.
Ralph Waldo Emerson: His transcendentalist philosophy on nature and self.
These influences collectively shape my writing, guiding me in exploring a wide range of themes and styles.
What are you working on now?
At the moment, I’m actively engaged in the production of an audiobook adaptation for my book. Additionally, I’m excited to share that I have a poetry series in the works, scheduled for release in 2024.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I find that social media platforms offer an effective means of promoting my books while engaging with my readers. Among my preferred platforms are Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok, where I can connect with my audience and share my work.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Stay Resilient: Understand that rejection is often a stepping stone, not a roadblock. Many iconic authors faced numerous rejections before their breakthrough.
Cherish Your Authenticity: Your unique voice and perspective are your strengths. Don’t shy away from them.
Embrace Feedback: Share your stories with trusted peers or mentors. Their insights can be invaluable for growth.
Never give up.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The most valuable advice I’ve received as a poetry author is to “write fearlessly and from the heart.” Poetry is a deeply personal art form, and when you allow your emotions and experiences to flow authentically onto the page without inhibition, it often results in the most profound and resonant verses.
What are you reading now?
At the moment, I’m currently revisiting the profound poetry of Khalil Gibran, and concurrently, I’m exploring the wisdom of “Feng Shui for the Soul” by Denise Linn.
What’s next for you as a writer?
As a writer, my journey is an ever-evolving adventure. What lies ahead is a tapestry of uncharted stories, unexplored themes, and creative experiments. I’m excited to continue pushing the boundaries of my craft, exploring new genres, and seeking fresh ways to connect with readers. Every word I write is a step into the unknown, and I’m eagerly anticipating where my imagination will lead me next.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
If I were to find myself stranded on a desert island with the opportunity to bring only three or four books, my top choice would undoubtedly be “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” series by Stieg Larsson. As for the remaining spots, it’s a tough decision between Dan Brown’s novels “Angels and Demons” and “The Da Vinci Code.” These gripping thrillers would keep me entertained and engaged during my time stranded.
