Interview With Author Kane Jesse Howard
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi there! My name is Kane Jesse Howard. At the time of writing this, I have currently released two full novels, and my collection of short stories is on the way hopefully sometime this year. I am a college student and writer.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my latest book is “My Broken Heart is Dead”. I originally started writing this book for an intro to novel writing class during my last semester in community college. It was inspired by some story ideas I had written down when I was much younger, probably a tween. When I found some of my old ideas, I couldn’t make total sense of them. However, I was able to take bits and pieces and build upon them to create something totally new.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I have always been told that I type very fast — I am not sure why! It’s a miracle that I haven’t developed carpal tunnel yet. Anyway, I type very fast, and I frequently take part in challenges that involve writing a ton of words in a short period of time.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Some of my favorite authors include Taylor Jenkins Reid, Elif Shafak, and Jacqueline Harpman.
What are you working on now?
Right now, I am working on my collection of short stories, and also the sequel to my first novel (“Romeo’s Card”) which is entitled “Romeo’s Power”. It’s been a lot of fun to return to these characters and plot lines, again! I should note that “My Broken Heart is Dead” is set within the same universe as my Romeo books, but without plot or character crossovers, and with a totally different setting.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Honestly, different things work for different people! Personally, my favorite method has been telling people in-person. Nine times out of ten, I am guaranteed that the person will want to look me up and get a copy. People who know you get very curious when they find out that you’ve published a book!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Learn your craft and learn it well. Never assume that you know how to write well just because you know how to put words on paper. If you can’t take criticism and apply it to your work, this line of work may not be for you.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write every single day, even if it’s just a few words.
What are you reading now?
I am listening to “The Architect’s Apprentice” by Elif Shafak.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Hopefully, the next thing for me will be to graduate college so that I can focus more on finishing up some of my books.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Oof, that’s a tough one. I’d definitely take “Don Quxiote”, “I Who Have Never Known Men”, “The Island of Missing Trees”, and “North Woods”. Final answer!
