Interview With Author Karen Douglas-Bhanot
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve written a few books that I haven’t yet published. “Picky Panda’s Tasty Adventures” is my first published book and will be one in a series of books that I’m currently working on.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Picky Panda’s Tasty Adventures.
I have 3 children – 2 of whom are autistic – and I wanted to write books to help families & caregivers deal with issues that young autistic children often face.
My autistic son, Alexander, has been drawing animals since he could hold a pen and I wanted to write books that show his unique artistic style.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m still developing my own style, I think. I don’t (yet) have any unusual writing habits but I am an “all or nothing” person. Once I start writing, I have to keep going. I’m not very good at doing things piecemeal.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Oooh…I read many different genres, so this is difficult to answer. I do like the children’s book author, Eevie Jones – she is so helpful and inspirational to novice writers.
What are you working on now?
The next book in “Animal Friends for Autistic Kids” series.
Dora and The Noisy Forest – which is for young autistic children who have sensory issues.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Still working on this one. I’m currently only selling on Amazon.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
This is a tricky one as I’m still learning so much myself. The one thing I would advise is to be crystal clear on who your books are aimed at, as this will help with the structure of the book, as well as marketing.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Probably from Reedsy who says you should write for your reader – not just to make profit (or words to that effect).
I think this is really important.
What are you reading now?
The Silent Watcher by Victor Methos
What’s next for you as a writer?
Just keep working on my book series. Learn how to market my books.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Mmm…tricky one…I would try to take books that would keep me sane until I was rescued ๐
Richard Dawkins – The God Delusion
Jonas Salzgeber – The Little Book of Stoicism
A practical book about catching food, building shelter etc. on a desert island ๐
