Interview With Author Karin Adams
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a lifelong reader and writer have always been drawn to stories and languages. I studied ancient languages and texts as a graduate student and went on to teach university courses in this area. However, I never forgot about the books and stories I loved as a young reader and that first sparked my desire to write. I’m now the author of five humorous novels for middle grade readers.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is The One Week Writing Workshop, a non-fiction handbook for adults aspiring to write a novel. It’s inspired by my own novel-writing process and my many years teaching this process to others in creative writing workshops.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m not sure how unusual this is, but I go for lots of walks to sort out my plots. There’s something about movement and the outdoors that helps “unstick” my thoughts when I’m spinning my wheels at my desk.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
The list is a long one! But if I have to choose, the books that I read as a young person have had an enduring impact. I love the honesty and authenticity of Judy Blume’s books, and the humour and imaginative premises in Gordon Korman’s writing. The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis were probably the very first books to spark my desire to write.
What are you working on now?
In the realm of fiction, I am working on a novel based on a reimagined fairy tale. I’ve always loved stories that launch from familiar tales and myths then recombine the elements in new and interesting ways. I’m enjoying the process!
I’m also currently putting the finishing touches on an online video course for aspiring novelists based on The One Week Writing Workshop book.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I share book news and my reflections on writing on my author website (https://www.karinadams.com) as well as on my publisher’s site (https://www.authorinyourcorner.com). I also post news and inspiring writing tips on Facebook (karin.adams.author), Twitter (@karin_adams) and Instagram (karin.adams.author).
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Stay connected to the kinds of stories and themes that have meaning to you. And don’t forget to play as you plan and write—experiment with plot possibilities, try writing scenes from different starting points or perspectives…explore! Writing is hard work, but the joy you have doing it is your fuel—so don’t forget to have fun!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I’m not sure who told me this or if I picked it up through experience, but I think many authors would agree with me: It’s good to have a plan, but don’t stay stuck in the planning phase. Writing is where the magic is and where ideas come alive.
What are you reading now?
I’ve been revisiting my treasured collection of Agatha Christie books and short stories.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I hope to continue doing the two things I love most: writing fiction and inspiring others to follow their own writing dreams.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis (I have them all in one book, so I think that counts!)
Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion by Jane Austen
Cue For Treason by Geoffrey Trease
