Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
This is the first book I’ve written but it’s not the only writing I’ve done. I workshopped a musical I created (book, music and lyrics) in NYC for many years before having twins. (Best project ever!) Now that my kids have graduated from college, I’m back to pursuing my passion for writing.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my book is Our Better Selves. It is a memoir that details the difficult time in my life and how I learned to overcome the obstacles I faced during this time period and in the aftermath the events.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to write everything down quickly and sort through it all later. One time, I wrote 20K words in one day. Sometimes, things just pour out of me. I think it’s because I’m always writing in my head and when I get a chance to put it in a document, it comes out in large chunks!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Margaret Atwood, Joyce Carole Oats, Alice Walker, Zora Neale Hurston, Jean Rhys, Virginia Woolf
What are you working on now?
I’m working on a podcast to address my other passion, cooking!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m really new at this so I have a lot to learn. So far, I have learned quite a bit by watching videos on YouTube, specifically by Joanna Penn of The Creative Penn.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
When I first started writing this memoir, I thought I would be done in less than a year because I wrote the first draft in less than three months. I got so much positive feedback, I thought I was close to being done. But I kept revising because it really needed it. Three years and 16 draft/revisions later, it is a much better book and one I’m really proud to present. Writing is a craft and a good book takes time to write.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
It’s cliche but don’t be afraid to kill your darlings. Get rid of anything in your manuscript that doesn’t add to telling the story.
What are you reading now?
A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m collaborating with a friend on a work of fiction.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Sophie’s Choice
The Handmaid’s Tale
The Color Purple
Their Eyes were Watching God
