Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a love guru, and I’ve been doing this work for over a decade. I have written 5 books, including the bestseller “Love Will Find You.” My work has gotten around the world now, and I’m honored to have helped so many people overcome heartache and find love.
I have a “wall of weddings” of people who have gotten married using my work and sent me a wedding photo. I even have a lot of baby photos ๐
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Dating for the One” It was inspired by the many dating workshops I’ve held and what a tough time people have with dating. It’s the first thing I’ve written on dating beyond my workshops, and it is needed! People get tied in knots when faced with a real, live person, especially an attractive one — and that’s the person most likely to be their “One”. So they have to overcome that shyness and learn to connect well with someone who catches their eye. Being forward is not required, just less intimidated and willing to connect. I also try to banish the idea of rejection for folks. It’s just a wrong fit and their One ends up being someone even “hotter” to them.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write at night after my children are in bed. My entire first book was written between 10 pm and 2 a.m.! And when I was on big deadline, I’d often have to camp out at a nearby upscale hotel lobby to get some writing done. I have four boys, so our household is LOUD! I cannot work at a desk, because it feels like work. So, I write on the bed or sofa with laptop in my lap — probably not the best for my posture, but it’s effective. I trick myself into thinking I”m not working, but just having fun.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Ask and It Is Given, The Power of Now.
What are you working on now?
The next book in my Love Attraction Series. It’s called “Online Dating for the One.” People insist on online dating, even though it’s easier to meet someone in person, once you know how. I taught a telecourse this summer by the same name and out of 25 people, 15 were dating someone seriously by the time it ended. It’s just a matter of knowing how, so I can’t wait to share this method in book form.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have a large email list of people who like my work. Whenever I let them know about a new book or a free book promotion, my books shoot up into the top 20 in their categories on Amazon, many times residing at the #1 spot. We have a new promotion called “True Love Tuesdays” where one of my books is free on Amazon every single week. That is really keeping my books on the charts.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
You HAVE to know something about marketing or at least seek to build a platform. With my first book, I went on a self-funded 25 city book tour (in which I ended up making money), threw a big book launch party and hounded the media relentlessly. It was a really good start. I shot up the bestseller list — even above Dr. Phil — from the pre-orders so it worked super well. The head of my publishing company called me personally to congratulate me, the book was selling so heavily. It continues to be “evergreen” and appear in the publisher’s catalogue (Da Capo) because I keep it selling with all the work I do (I am a full-time love guru which helps — it’s my only focus).
Just think of marketing as good communication. You’re doing your audience a favor to let them know about you, your work and what to expect. If they don’t know about you, they won’t know to buy your book, right?
Also, reviews help. So have family, friends and fans get the book (or give it away) and then, review it online. Send it to all sorts of review sites & publications, too.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Nothing is impossible. You’re only limited by how big you’ll let yourself dream.
What are you reading now?
“Gone, Girl” which was repped by my agent
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m adoring releasing shorter ebooks in a series, so I’ll keep doing that for the near future. Love is a vast topic, and I teach so much I have endless material.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Pride & Prejudice. I’m a sucker for a good love story, which is probably why I adore working in the field of dating & love.
