Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I actually just recently self-published my first novel in an epic fantasy series. I grew up as both an avid reader and huge video game nerd. The thing that drew me in the most to read or play was always a compelling story and memorable characters, which is what compels me to write.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of the novel is Broken Blades Don’t Sing, and it was inspired by my love for the fantasy genre and setting. I grew up reading and playing these kinds of stories, and it is my dream to create a universe of my own that even comes close to the magical places I was transported to when immersing myself in the works of many creative minds.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m not sure if this would count as unusual, but I tend to think about a lot of edits of my work as I’m going through a draft. For example, I might be halfway through writing a draft, and I will think back on something I wrote in the beginning of the book that I know I will modify at some point. Sometimes, I have to change it immediately (OCD kicking in I suppose). Other times, I will jot down quick notes about it lest I forget when I actually get back to editing.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Of course, any fantasy author is going to name Tolkien, Martin, Lewis, etc. I’d add Rothfuss and Sanderson to that list, in addition to a few other authors (Vonnegut, Orwell, and Lovecraft) who have inspired me.
I was a huge fan of Blizzard Entertainment, particular in their earlier installments of StarCraft, Diablo, and WarCraft, and have read a wealth of novels pertaining to those games. Knaak and Golden are a couple of authors from those series that have inspired me.
What are you working on now?
Right now I have two books on my plate: the second and third novels of Tales of Ashkar. I have completed the first draft of my second novel, and I am currently editing it. At the same time I’m also working on the third, and hope to be done with the first draft by the end of the year.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I must confess that I am new at publishing in general, and am doing my best to get the word out. I’ve found that Goodreads groups are a great place to start, as they have a ton of resources for authors. It’s pretty much where everything is centralized, so I would say that is the best method.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I’m not sure if I’m qualified to answer this, but as far as upcoming authors that are not published yet go, my advice would be to never be deterred. Always go for it, or in Shia Labeouf’s words “Just do it!”
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Like the one I’m giving for new authors, I would say that advice was the best I’ve ever heard. It’s what has kept me going when I’ve found myself in a rut.
What are you reading now?
Right now I’m reading Cross Academy by Valicity Garris, and Community 17 by James Cardona. Like me, they are up and coming authors and I think it is important that we all help each other get exposure.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Continuing to work on the next installments of my series. One book is great, but I can’t stop there.
