Interview With Author KD Lumsden
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have written a lot of stories, but only published 7 books, all part of the same series.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Bound By Iron & Blood, was inspired by a question my son asked “What made Irwin’s father so mad?” BBI&B is the story of Irwin’s parents, how they met and what made Albert (Irwin’s father) so angry. I write Noblebright & Grimdark Queer Epic Fantasy.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I get most of my ideas while cleaning horse stalls. I own a farm so there’s a lot of cleaning happening, and every day!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Heinlein (Stranger in a Strange Land), Terry Goodkind (Sword of Truth series), Robert Jordan (Wheel of Time series), anything Neil Gaiman or Kurt Vonnegut
What are you working on now?
There are a few reader’s magnets (easter eggs) for people who sign up to my newsletter, I’m trying to finish them, but in the long run there’s a series that stars a shapeshifting woman who must confront an empire in order return her kidnapped sister home, and a teleporter who’s family she had to kill to find her sister. All action and adventure and takes you across the world of Eurthia, before it becomes the planet of Urthis (where my current series The Metalist’s Journey happens). Lots of dark symbolism, would consider it a grim dark fantasy as the whole planet pays the price.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m a wide author so you can find my stories in all the online storefronts. I’m working on getting into libraries and hope to do a few outdoor fairs in the coming years. But I usually promote via online promotional places such as this venue, BookBub, Written Word Media, and Crave Books.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
It’s a marathon not a race, take it in stride. For wide authors it can take 5 years or more to see a profit. When in doubt, create more than you consume (I find myself death scrolling too much sometimes, when I should be writing). Oh and podcasts, listen to as many as you can. There are so many amazing tools you’ll learn about by listening to (The Creative Podcast, Wish I’d Known Then, Sell More Books Show, Self-Publishing Insiders with Draft 2 Digital, just to name a few).
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Editors are worth their weight in gold, and they are!
What are you reading now?
Under the whispering door, TJ Klune
What’s next for you as a writer?
To take over the world! ๐
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Only 3-4? Gouge my eyes out… but if I only can have 3-4…. 1 needs to be a journal because I’d go crazy if I couldn’t write, but The Wizard’s First Rule, Eye of the World, Stranger in a Strange land, because I need to grok!
