Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hello! I’m Kelly and I’ve lived in Chicago for ten years. I love everything about living in the city and Chicago was a huge inspiration for my first novel.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My novel is called, A Girl’s Guide to Chicago. As I wrote my book, I had a few goals in mind (other than writing a good book for readers to enjoy). I wanted to write a book that is inspiring to girls and women (and even guys) who are moving to Chicago, already live in Chicago, or are planning to visit or move to the city. I want anyone who lives or visits Chicago to read about how wonderful the city truly is and all the fun things to experience here.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Maybe not so unusual, but cleaning my house or taking a long walk really helps me to think through writer’s block or to find inspiration.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Oh so many, but I would have to say the first author to really inspire me was Sophie Kinsella. I love her light-hearted writing and humor. When I was going through difficult times her books really gave me a good laugh. Lately, I’ve enjoyed reading, The Women in the Window, The Good Widow, The Marriage Lie, and I’m currently reading Mr. & Mrs. American Pie.
What are you working on now?
Well, I’m currently marketing A Girl’s Guide to Chicago and I hope to start working on another novel next year.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I own a blog called girlsguidechicago.com. I write guides for girls of everything fun to do throughout the city. I have built up a following through my blog and social media which has helped me to promote my book.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just starting writing. Get your ideas or notes on paper. Be truthful in your writing and enjoy the process.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
You don’t have to be a well-known author to publish a book. You can make your own success. Just make sure you put something good out there.
What are you reading now?
I’m currently reading Mr. & Mrs. American Pie by Juliet McDaniel. She is also a Chicago author!
What’s next for you as a writer?
I would love to publish another novel.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
That is such a tough question! I don’t typically re-read books so I would probably take four new books that I’ve never read. Something inspiring, something fun, something suspenseful, and something romantic.
