Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
After retiring from a career in law enforcement, I settled in Fort Collins, Colorado with my wife and daughters, and a ghost named Mary Bell. To date, I have two novels published, The Devil’s Lament (Winlock Press) and, The Amazing Mr. Howard (JournalStone), and a nonfiction book, Ghost Under Foot: the Spirit of Mary Bell (Llewellyn).
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is the novel, The Devil’s Lament. The story originally started out as a horror novel with Lucifer as the antagonist, but the plot changed as I did my research. In the end, Lucifer turned into the protagonist and the book became a paranormal fantasy built around an epic love story.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to stop after writing a couple of pages, even if I’m in the middle of a scene, and then come back to it.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, Red Dragon.
What are you working on now?
I’m developing a psychological suspense novel tentatively titled, “In the Light of Darkness.”
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ve done the majority of my marketing on Twitter, but I also use Facebook and Google Plus.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t try to jump from point A to point D in your career. I used to just write novels and try submitting them to agents and publishers. When I decided to write short stories to gain publishing credits and entered some writing contests, my career started to take off.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Work on your writing career everyday, whether you’re writing, plotting, researching, or marketing.
What are you reading now?
Mystic River–Dennis Lehane.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I have projects lined up waiting to be written. Everything from mysteries and YA fantasy, to horror.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Great Gatsby. The Grapes of Wrath. My three volume set of “Far-Side” cartoons (I would need something to put a smile on my face).
