Interview With Author Kevin Kendall
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m from the UK and have written a couple of books before my current one, but have since unpublished the earlier ones. The first one was not very good, being a reaction to a bad business interaction with a certain tech giant, so was little more than a rant about unfairness! The second one was a children’s picture book, which was quite well received, but it does not fit with my new book. So, my latest book is effectively my first. I am happiest when creating things, whether artistic projects or DIY challenges, and have an endless desire to understand things.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
When The Solution Is The Problem. I struggled with serious illness, Crohn’s Disease, for a long, long time, and have managed to reverse this, by ending my reliance on the medical industry and adopting a very simple approach to my health. As such, I feel I have something of genuine worth to share with others. The book turns all accepted wisdom and advice on its head, but I have taken great care in not offering impossible goals to the reader. While aimed at anyone looking to change their perspective, my greatest hope is that people at an earlier point on a similar trajectory can take what I have to say on board, and might be able to avoid a lifetime of suffering.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not sure if this is unusual, but I adopt a similar approach to computer programming, something I spent a great deal of time learning when I was younger. As far as I see it, there are two basic ways of writing, whether that is words or computer code. The first is a top-down approach and this provides structure. The second is bottom-up, which allows you to flow. In true computer hacking style, I mix and match, but as I mentioned, maybe this is something everyone does.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m not going to mention names, but I like anything that pushes the boundaries of reason. So I love a good conspiracy, not because I want to believe it, but because I want to understand how people come to see the world at the outer edges. This applies to both fiction and nonfiction.
What are you working on now?
Trying to blow away some of the tumbleweed that is drifting and bouncing over my new book in my little corner of the internet. Apart from that, I’m doing some landscape painting, my other hobby.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Learning how to promote is still a work in progress for me, so my honest answer is I don’t know. Probably best to stay away from the likes of Fiverr though – I got burned on there with mobile app promotion a few years ago.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Put your work in front of people, whatever that work is. Try to take negative criticism on board without letting it get to you.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
‘Don’t take any s**t from anyone’ – my dad just before he died. Very, very hard to live up to, but the value of it is indisputable.
What are you reading now?
A book about cults.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I really don’t know. I’ve kind of bared my soul with the book I’ve just released, so life could go in one of several directions. I’m cutting my teeth on something fictional, based around some of the most outrageous conspiracy theories I can find. It could take some time before I’m happy with my character development skills though, so I’ll probably have some more nonfiction done before my story to beat all stories is anywhere near ready.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Lord of the Rings
A Song of Fire and Ice (if I can count the whole series as one book),
A Commando Survival Guide
