Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I began writing plays because I found that I couldn’t find very many that I liked for the age group I was working with. I published them in order to secure the rights. But I always wanted to write a book. So one day I decided to stop saying “some day” and actually made it happen. It was so much work but also such a joy. Now I’m hooked for life.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My current project is “Follow the Music.” It was inspired by the question “what if a talented musician lost their sense of hearing?” The idea sort of came to life after that.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Since I started writing as a playwright, I do lots of my editing by reading aloud to myself. I also speak all conversations out loud to myself to make sure they flow. I also don’t write in order. I make a vague outline and write whichever scenes I am inspired to write that day. Then I go back and fill in the blanks.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on a fantasy novel called “Follow the Music.” It is currently in its editing/revising stage and should be available in March 2017.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My best method to promote my books isn’t online at all. During the summer months, my husband and I rent tables at local Farmer’s Markets and promote my books there. I have sold hundreds of copies of my book this way. I’ve also made great connections with other local writers and artisans.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Make time to write every day. Listen to other people; other writers, agents, readers, bookstore owners. Listen to everyone and learn from them. Never ever assume you know more than anyone else in the room. Be observant and be humble.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I have ever heard was said by my Creative Writing Professor in college. He said, “Great writers write.” This advice is what inspired me to finally sit down and write my first book.
What are you reading now?
I am currently reading “The Least of These” by author Daniel Mark Luke. It is an account of a deadly shark attack based on a true story. I met the author at a local bookstore.
