Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Larry Vaughn and I’m a Vietnam veteran. I thought I was one of the lucky ones who got away scot-free. But apparently, nobody who goes to war ever gets away scot-free. I didn’t know there was anything wrong with me. But the people around me did. I was irritable and short-tempered most of the time. And I was always mad about something. In 1998, I reached the point where I couldn’t control my emotions. My Doctors told me that I had PTSD. They took me off work and I never went back to my job as a Letter Carrier. I applied for a medical retirement. But the Postal Service took over a year to process it. And during that year, my wife and I had no income. This was rock bottom for me. I was old and broke and too sick to work. And I didn’t know if I would ever be able to work again. So I cried out to God in desperation and asked him to help me. And I started spending hours each day studying the Bible. I didn’t know what I was doing at the time. But I was fellowshipping with God in his word. And while I was getting to know him, he was teaching me things that I needed to know. One of these things was how to cope with PTSD. I was mining the Bible for life-lessons from God. And when I saw a Bible verse that jumped out at me, I copied it down. I believe that the verses I’ve collected are the most interesting and informative verses in the Bible. I’m excited about the things that I’ve learned from them. I want to share them with everyone. And that’s why I wrote my two Bible-study books.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is a Crash Course in the Bible. It’s a summary of the Bible’s most important teachings. I wanted to make Bible truths easy to access and easy to understand.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to wake in the middle of the night, at 3 or 4 AM, to write.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Hal Lindsey’s book, the Late Great Planet Earth, convinced me that the Bible is true. I wanted to be like him and write about the Bible too. I wanted to write a book that would teach new Christians everything that they needed to know.
What are you working on now?
I’m finishing my first novel.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
The paperback version of A Crash Course in the Bible is available on Amazon.com. The eBook is available on Kindle. And the audiobook will soon be available on Audible.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Yes. The most important thing to do is to get the whole thing written. And not worry about how bad it is. You’re going to go back and rewrite it anyway. Writing is rewriting.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Ernest Hemingway’s observation that experience is communicated through small details.
What are you reading now?
I like reading books by Michael Connelly.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’ve always wanted to be a novelist and now that dream is about to come true.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, The Bible Believer’s Handbook and Bartlett’s Familiar quotations.
