Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve been writing for just under 10 years. This is my 7th book. I’ve published 2 suspense books with Harper Collins and the other 5 under my own publishing house, Camellia Press. It’s been a wonderful ride and a great learning experience. The best part has been connecting with readers! I am so grateful for much love and support along the way!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of the book is The World Breaks Everyone. It is set in New Orleans and focuses on the daughter of a famous chef who is attacked the evening of her father’s new restaurant opening.
I was inspired to write about the city because it’s a place I’ve visited frequently – it has a really unique vibe with all of the wonderful food, music, history, architecture, and dark lore.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Nothing too unusual! I do prefer to have a quiet space and some coffee! I am definitely a plotter – I have to have a relatively detailed outline.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
JoJo Moyes
Janet Fitch
Margaret Atwood
Chris Bohjalian
Anita Diamant
Lisa See
What are you working on now?
I am working on a YA dystopian book set in Russia centering on the life of a teenage girl who is forced to become an assassin when her mother dies.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Websites like Awesome Gang are great for authors! There is no substitute for support of readers and recommendations/word of mouth!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read a lot and write a lot! There is no substitute for the work. All of the fabulous promotion in the world will not sell a poorly-written book. As an author, you have to put in the work and be willing to revise/revise/revise.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Study all of the best story structure books out there, including anything by:
Stephen King (On Writing)
Larry Brooks
Robert McKee
James Scott Bell
What are you reading now?
Queen of the Tearling (YA), Ericka Johansen
Clementine (Non-Fiction), Biography of Winston Churchill’s wife)
The Lying Game, Ruth Ware
What’s next for you as a writer?
More suspense writing. Would love to venture into the dystopian YA world.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Me Before You, JoJo Moyes
White Oleander, Janet Fitch
