Interview With Author Leonie Althea
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I'm Jamaican born and raised. I grew up with my very overprotective grandmother and spent a lot of time indoors, which drove me to make up stories and poetry. My love for writing led to a career in marketing and advertising. Most of my writing so far has been in the business world, but now I"m transitioning to creating content that shares the stories I want to tell. How Rice Met Peas is my first published book so far.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is called How Rice Met Peas, which is inspired by my Jamaican heritage. But what's interesting is that I didn't imagine the book; the story just came to me in one piece.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Typically, I don't sit down with the intention to write a story. Words come to me naturally when I'm just doing my normal activities.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Jamaican poet and writer, Louise Bennett is one of my biggest influences for storytelling. Her vibrant personality in how she told stories made it possible for me to imagine myself as an author.
What are you working on now?
I'm working on a sequel to How Rice Met Peas.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My personal website.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Yes. If you feel stuck and not sure how to go about getting your story out, seek help immediately. Whether it's just to brainstorm ideas with someone, do research online, or hire a professional publicist, do something to get the ball rolling.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
No one is coming to save you. Learn to stand on your own two feet.
What are you reading now?
Awakened Empath. It's a book about healing the emotional, psychological, and spiritual attributes of being an empath.
What’s next for you as a writer?
My next step is building an audience and doing book tours and signings.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, The Shack, and How Rice Met Peas.
