Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m the author of the Bombay Family of Assassins humor/mystery/romance series – with 4 books and one novella, and the author of The Adulterer’s Unofficial Guide to Family Vacations – a completely different and somewhat naughtier book.
I live in the Midwest with my husband and 2 teenagers and a wild assortment of animals. I teach canoeing, archery, ropes course and zip line for the Girl Scouts, read, knit and play the ukulele. I also like cake.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The latest book in the Bombay Series is Paradise By The Rifle Sights. I wrote it because I thought Paris Bombay needed his own book and I was sick and tired of The Bachelor. The next book I have coming out will be Snuff the Magic Dragon – a collection of Bombay Hits through history. I like writing humor because I like reading humor. I’d rather laugh than cry.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I sit in my office in a big, pink recliner, usually with a couple of cats and a dog on or near me. I do this until I’m hungry for cake or thirsty for a cocktail.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Allison Pearson’s I Don’t Know How She Does It got me interested in trying my hand at writing. I love Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams, David Thorne and David Sedaris, and will read anything by Jana Deleon and Gemma Halliday. Just got finished reading the Unicorn Western series and loved it.
What are you working on now?
Besides Snuff the Magic Dragon – I’m working on a funny sci-fi serial: The Adventures of Bob Palindrome in Space. The first installment, Dr. Awkward should go live any day now and I’m almost done with the second installment – Taco Cat. There should be 3 serials in this series…that is, unless there are four.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I don’t really know yet. It’s so random right now. I have a facebook page and a twitter account – both of which I’m sure I’m doing wrong. I have a website and I’m throwing everything at the wall like a wacky wall walker to see what sticks.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Get that first book done! Then write the next one! Most new authors I meet have an idea but very few ever sit down to write it and finish it. Then they work on it without starting the next one. ‘Scuse Me While I Kill This Guy, the first book in the series and the first book I sold, was actually the fourth book I’d written.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Nora Roberts said write it down no matter what. “I can fix a broken page, but I can’t fix a blank one.” I live by that.
What are you reading now?
I’m sampling some indie authors, looking for edgy and funny. I’ll be starting David Sedaris’ newest – Exploring Diabetes With Owls this week.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Getting more books out! I have a huge list of partials I’ve written over the years that were rejected by my former publisher. I’d like to get some of them up. I’ll probably always write humor.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Ooooh. That’s a toughie. Probably Agatha Christie’s The Murder of Roger Ackroyd or Jenny Lawson’s Let’s Pretend This Never Happened. One makes me think and the other makes me laugh. I won’t tell which is which…
