About Life into Death: and Other Stories About the Two Gods Who Balance the Earth by E. S. Sibbald
Life exists in the bright places of the world. Death lingers in the shadows. Together, they have presided over Earth since the beginning of time.
Death, steadfast in the knowledge of his eternal purpose to watch the life clock of every life form steadily tick toward their end, has never felt any attachment to the living. They simply are what they are, just as Death is what Death always has, and always will be.
Life, so in love with the living world it would seem narcissistic in anyone else, adores and envies the acts of humanity. Why should they have to suffer? Why should they have to come to an end after such a brief existence?
Two opposite forces, they balance the Earth on a delicate scale. As centuries pass and their desire to understand each other grows, the carefully kept equilibrium begins to tilt.
