Interview With Author Lissa Raines
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
A graduate of SEU in Lakeland, FL and of AGTS Theological Seminary, I have worn many hats, from missionary to educator to business owner to author. I am married to the love of my life, Doug, and have one adorable rescue dog, Stormy. She is an Sheltie, Australian Shepherd mix.
I wrote a non-fiction book back in 2010 that was a sort of self-help for graduates covering some basic life advice that I wish I’d known at that age. My latest book, Harvest Island, was released this month, November 2023, and is a Christian Fiction mystery.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Harvest Island. The inspiration was twofold. One part of the story was remotely based on a friend’s situation. Then all the different ways people look for validation and worth that can’t possibly be sustained was a secondary motivation. I love a good mystery and wove clues into my characters dreams. It seemed to be a unique take, and I love something that is a bit different, rather than a cookie cutter format.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I wrote the end of the story first. Then the dream sequences were mapped out, followed by the in between chapters with intriguing plot twists. I sometimes formulate a whole scene in my head and other times, just start writing and see how the chapter develops.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love Terri Blackstock, Brandilyn Collins, Carrie Stewart Parks. and Mary Higgins Clark. These are all mystery writers.
What are you working on now?
I have started the process of mentally forming a sequel to Harvest Island.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Things have changed drastically since I first published. Back then going on podcasts, radio and tv were the primary modes to promote my book. Now most everything is online, so I am learning the best methods as I go. I’ll get back to you when I find out what is most successful!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep writing. Set goals. I stopped and started a few times and then decided I needed quantifiable measures. I set a reasonable number of words per day 5 days a week. I almost always exceeded it. But never stopped before I reached that number.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Continue to learn your craft. There is always room for improvement, but don’t wait until your book is “perfect.” It will never happen!
What are you reading now?
The Intervention Series by Terri Blackstock
What’s next for you as a writer?
A sequel to Harvest Island.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible (for my spirit), a survival guide ๐ (for my body), and the latest Carrie Stewart-Parks mystery (for my soul)!
