Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a retired mother of three sons and grandmother of seven grandchildren. My husband, Billy, and I live in Hoschton, Georgia. I’ve always been a writer. At age 11 I was asked to read a short story I had written to my 7th grade class. Everyone wanted me to continue after I had finished. Mrs. Miller, my 7th grade teacher encouraged me to keep writing. And I have. I graduated from Brenau College as a single mother of two boys with a degree in Journalism. Skills in writing helped me in a variety of careers, but it was not possible to earn a living writing in the ’70’s. Therefore, I wrote whenever I had a moment. I also have a love for books, bookstores and libraries. In fact, my first job was in a library while I was in high school.
I retired from a local hospital after 20 years as a director in Human Resources. Then I began my career writing novels.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
All the Way is my latest book. The death of my mother inspired me to research her life, growing up during the Great Depression. I wanted to know what events shaped her choices in life and why she was the woman I knew as Mom. As I researched the time-frame, mores, faith, hardships and sheer will that got families through that period in our history, I decided I could write an interesting, informative description of the small towns southeast of Atlanta and around Hall County and weave those facts into a book about the people who endured and overcame those hardships.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t think my habits are unusual for a writer. When I sit down to write, I experience what has been called “flow”. I am the happiest, most engrossed and time unconscious person that I think most writers must be.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
In the beginning, I just loved to read. Anything and everything I could carry in my arms along the mile walk to my house from the library. Then I was inspired by Ernest Hemingway. I read all of his works and got inspiration from many of them. More recently I wanted to write like John Grisham, but I knew I probably couldn’t research enough to produce the volume he does. Finally, I’ve evolved into a more simple writing style. I thoroughly enjoy Nicholas Sparks and feel that his work is best suited to today’s busy lifestyle.
What are you working on now?
I have just started research on a book that opens in Hawaii, but originates in Atlanta. At this point, I’m just getting to know the main character. I’m not even set on her name yet. But I do know that she has made some poor decisions in her life and she is in Hawaii trying to decide how she got there and why she continues to stay.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Since I’m a newbie, I’m not sure. This website is very author-based. I’m hoping it will give me a big push with readers who like inspiring stories, that promote the Christian faith and are an easy, quick read.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just write!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never give up!
What are you reading now?
I just finished a book by another new author, Nicho’ Martin, 40 Years to Heal A Broken Child. My next read will be from another author, Susan Abel, Through the Mist. It is fun to read other new authors and see where they come from and how they interpret life in their books.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Promoting the books I’ve written and keep writing!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible would be it. There would be no need for another book. It contains, mystery, hate, violence, love, kindness, forgiveness, mercy, grace. Everything we need to think or read about.
