Interview With Author Lucas Alves
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
This is my debut novel.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The title of the novel is “Signatures”. It takes its name from the interweaving strands that binds the selected number of pages in a book. The story is about an up and coming author whose life starts to come upended with the surmounting pressure of his next novel.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write all my first drafts by hand in blue notebooks. Once the story is complete I write the second draft on my Olivetti Lettera. That’s when I do my heavy edits and write a third draft on the computer to be sent to an editor. I only write longhand with fountain pens or Blackwing pencils.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Cormac McCarthy, Ernest Hemingway, Joseph Conrad, Herman Melville, William Faulkner, Stephen King. I strive to write a story in the classical, minimalistic tradition.
What are you working on now?
A mosaic story about humanity’s obsession with pursuing their unknown desires. Tentatively titled “The Pursuer”.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Instagram: https://instagram.com/lucasalvesauthor?igshid=OGQ5ZDc2ODk2ZA==
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t plan or plot. True writing comes from the unconscious.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Writing is an unconscious process – Cormac McCarthy.
What are you reading now?
Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Working on my second draft of “The Pursuer”.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Cormac McCarthy’s “The Crossing”, Melville’s “Moby Dick” and Faulkner’s “A Fable”.
