Interview With Author Luna Fae
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Luna Fae, and I’m a storyteller, mama, and proud creative spirit. I write empowering children’s books that center culture, identity, and joy — especially for kids who deserve to see themselves celebrated on the page. ABC’s for US is my debut title, and I’m currently working on additional books in the series, as well as a coloring book version.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
ABC’s for US was inspired by my own children and the need for more books that reflect the brilliance and beauty of Black culture. I wanted to create something vibrant, educational, and affirming — a book where kids could learn their ABCs while meeting trailblazers, artists, and icons that look like them.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to write in bursts of inspiration — sometimes late at night, sometimes right after my kids say something funny or profound. I keep voice memos on my phone and often write scenes or lines while cooking or cleaning.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m inspired by authors like bell hooks, Jacqueline Woodson, and Vashti Harrison — all women who beautifully blend culture, truth, and empowerment in their storytelling. Books that celebrate identity and spark imagination have always stuck with me.
What are you working on now?
I’m developing several more books in the ABC’s for US series — including special editions for historical figures, entertainers, and sports heroes. I’m also working on a coloring book version and building an Etsy collection of culturally inspired digital printables for kids.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I love connecting directly with readers through social media, especially Facebook. I also use platforms like Amazon KDP, Canva, and promo sites like Freebooksy, Awesome Gang, and Book Cave to reach a wider audience during launch weeks.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t wait for perfection — just start. Get your story out, share your message, and improve as you go. And don’t be afraid to publish independently — the tools are out there, and your voice matters.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Create what you wish existed.” That reminder keeps me grounded and inspired, especially when I’m writing stories I know my younger self (and my kids) needed but didn’t have growing up.
What are you reading now?
I’m bouncing between Rest Is Resistance by Tricia Hersey and Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. Both speak to the balance of creativity, rest, and reclaiming our time — themes I’m embracing this season.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m expanding the ABC’s for US series and preparing to publish themed spin-offs that highlight Black women, men, athletes, entertainers, and changemakers. I’m also building a collection of digital and print resources that support cultural education for young readers.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
All About Love by bell hooks
The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron
The Bible
The Big Book of Black Heroes — because I’d still want to feel inspired and connected to purpose, even on a desert island.
