Interview With Author Lyralen Kaye
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a multi-hyphenate writer! I’ve been so busy writing screenplays the last few years (I have a web series on YouTube and WeAreOTV.com) that I’ve been stockpiling manuscripts! I’ve written a novella, a novel, a memoir and a book of poetry that I’ll be releasing in 2024 and 2025. I love to write. I also love to act and direct. I have an special passion for devised work. That’s when I go into communities, listen to and collect stories and write a performable piece from that material.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The latest is Priest Kid, an updated version. It was inspired by my screenplay Saint John the Divine in Iowa. The screenplay tells the mother’s story…I wrote the novella from the daughter’s perspective. And the entire story came from interviewing Episcopal priests, gay and straight, about what it’s like to be a priest and live that life.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write in my head. Usually while out on the ocean. Then I come in and transcribe it.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I LOVE James Baldwin. He’s been my fave my whole life. I also love Ryka Aoki! Jane Smiley and Allison Bechdel. In genre, currently in love with Kristin Cashore.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on a memoir that has graphic elements and mythopoetic sections. I love experimentation!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still learning, but I have to say that Kindlepreneur is my go to currently.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write, read and hang out with other writers you respect. Keep learning! And don’t let the corporate structure of publishing get you down.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Be here now.
What are you reading now?
Once and Future, a nonbinary/queer take on the King Arthur myth.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m interested in writing a fantasy book. A short jump from mythopoetic after all.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Tell Me How Long the Train’s Been Gone, Light from Uncommon Stars, Graceling, The Crystal Cave.
