Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a soft-spoken and sensitive sort who holds a deep-seated love for all things fantasy. I was the typical Dungeons & Dragons kid, a geek before it was cool. I completed three novels before my debut was published by Hydra Publications. I also have short stories published in Heroic Fantasy Quarterly and New Realm Magazine.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Virtue and Vengeance: Empire of Cinders was inspired by the grittier style of fantasy and historical fiction. Heavy on the medieval world-building, but with influences from the early dynasties of the Far East. Lots of conflict, deception, lust, and deadly intrigue.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tried writing while hanging upside down from the ceiling like a vampire. It worked pretty well in the creative sense, until the harness snapped and I fell on my head.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Lots of R.A. Salvatore when I was young, as well as Robert Jordan, Terry Goodkind, Brian Jacques, and Tolkien of course. As I’ve grown older it’s become more historical fiction and darker fantasy. Steven Pressfield, Gary Jennings, James Clavell, George RR Martin, Joe Abercrombie, and a bit of Steven Erikson.
What are you working on now?
Currently working on the grim and gritty sequel to Virtue and Vengeance, but I have a standalone fantasy novel that will likely be released in the interim.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Amazon, Facebook, conventions, e-book discount sites like Book Barbarian and Bargain Booksey.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just keep writing. Don’t wait to be inspired, tell yourself it’s time to get to work. Find a place that is free from distraction, and let your imagination go.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Create like a god, command like a king, work like a slave.
What are you reading now?
Samurai Wind by Nigel Sellars, and Shadowlith by Stuart Thaman. Both excellent fantasy novels – check ’em out!
What’s next for you as a writer?
More writing!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
All I would need is the book of collected poems by Emily Dickinson.
