Interview With Author M. S. Gardner
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a writer with a day job. I work as a Library Technical Assistant. I have a couple of unpublished books in various stages of revision; I’ve published several short stories and academic papers.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Wolf’s Bane is the title of my book. It’s inspired by the fairy tale, Little Red Riding Hood.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I get up early in the morning to write before work. I also like to have a candle burning while I’m writing. Coffee is a must.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Flannery O’Connor (anything and everything by O’Connor); Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber; The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane by Laird Koenig
What are you working on now?
A series of connected short stories surrounding a diner in Pennsylvania.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m new to the whole promoting my work, so I don’t have a good answer. It is important to reach out locally to other writers, writing groups, book clubs, and independent bookstores.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t worry if your writing is ‘good’ or ‘bad’–just write. Writing, any and all writing, involves rewriting. Get the first draft done, then go back and polish it.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice comes from Steven Pressfield’s book The War of Art. In this book, he writes about recognizing “Resistance” and fighting against it.
What are you reading now?
Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion
What’s next for you as a writer?
Just to keep writing every day until the end of time.
