Interview With Author Magdalena Cochanski Rodríguez
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am an author and illustrator of children’s books with a learning purpose. I am from Mexico, married to a German, and we have three kids born in the US. We speak three languages at home, and finding easy children’s books for my kids to practice my husband’s and my first language was a bit of a challenge. I started writing bilingual books, which I offer in the combination of the two languages selected by the reader. I finished my 4-book collection and now I am focused on science books with the purpose of inspiring children to learn about science and participate in making our world a better place. I hope my books reach many children, for them to strengthen their tools to build a better world.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Little Great Hydrogen. Andrea Menegazzo, my co-author, and I, decided to put together a book, to motivate children to learn how fascinating science can be, and how it can be used to improve our future. Challenges that our planet is facing right now, like global warming, are topics that have a great impact on me. The purpose of this book is to nurture children’s brains and for them to comprehend the place in which we live, while encouraging them to actively build a scientific path towards a better future.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
One of my favorite activities is running. I noticed that while running, sometimes illustrations and phrases start popping up in my mind. When this happens, I try to make a sketch or a note, almost immediately after my run, before they fade away.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Das NEINhorn, by Marc-Uwe Kling and Astrid Henn.
Bill Watterson. All of his illustrations.
Sapiens, by Yuval Noah Harari.
How to Avoid a Climate Disaster, by Bill Gates.
What are you working on now?
On promoting my books, especially my newest “Little Great Hydrogen” for them to reach many children and have the greatest possible impact.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Social media. IG _holahallo.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
If you are working on a new book: Every phrase you add, make sure you are giving all what’s in your heart and mind, to make sure the result is truly its best version for it to fulfill its purpose in the best possible way.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Are you really trying to accomplish something to the point that it hurts?
Someone once asked me that and I now apply it in every project I do.
What are you reading now?
Since long ago I wanted to read “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, but another book always ended up in my hands. I am finally reading it now and about to finish it.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Keep making books for children with a learning purpose, for them to learn meaningful and impactful information.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.
A Gentleman in Moscow, by Amor Towles.
La Fiesta del Chivo, by Mario Vargas Llosa.
