Interview With Author Majid Riaziat
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
During my high school years, I developed diverse interests in physics, philosophy, art, and poetry. Being practical, I chose to pursue a career in science and technology while keeping the rest of my interests as hobbies. My college education was in applied physics. I received my PhD from Stanford University, and for several decades, I worked as a researcher and entrepreneur, specializing in technology development and commercialization. I live in San Francisco Bay Area. I’ve written two books: an engineering textbook and the latest one on social philosophy.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book “The Age of Simorgh” is about planning for human convergence with technology. I completed most of the writing during the Covid pandemic. In my professional career, have been involved with technology development and I feel comfortable with it. I don’t believe in sounding alarms every time there is a significant technical breakthrough. Instead, I believe in careful planning of how we should interact with technology, and if we do, we should expect a bright future.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
My writing begins with single sentences that I write as notes to myself. This process may take up to a year or more, during which I spend my free time studying and reading about the subject. Once I have enough notes (about 3 to 4 pages), I begin writing by consolidating the notes into multiple sections and topics to be completed over time.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have always enjoyed reading Bertrand Russel. I enjoy his logical approach to social issues. An old book that I have read many times starting in late grade school is “123 Infinity” by the physicist George Gamow. This is a technical book written in simple language. The illustrations are pencil drawings done by him. I also enjoyed reading the book “The Prize” by Daniel Yergin.
What are you working on now?
I am continuing to study the concept of people merging with technology, and what the future of Simorgh will look like. This work may lead to a second edition for “The Age of Simorgh”.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
There is no single method or website that could by itself be very effective in promoting the book. A multifaceted approach to book promotion is best.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Hurry up. Books may become obsolete.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I heard was not to take any writing advice too seriously. Just start writing and you will soon figure out what works best for you.
What are you reading now?
I am reading about the philosophy and physiology of happiness.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Possibly a second edition for “The Age of Simorgh”.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
1. The little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
2. Ethics and politics in human society by Bertrand Russel
3. History of philosophy by Will Durant
