Interview With Author Mallory Glass
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hello! I’m Mallory Glass and I’ve written 3 books, but have only published one (so far). I am currently working on two books. I do have a short story coming out in a horror anthology (Dread Mondays) in late October of this year.
My business partner and I run a micro press, with an office in MN and one in TN. We keep very busy! We’ve put out two novellas in 2025, and 3 zines since August 2024. We love publishing the zine with art and stories we get from around the world. That has been a fun project.
I have a pet rabbit, who terrorizes the household and always gets her way. I’ve had rabbits about 11 years now, as well as cats. I’m an animal lover, and it’s probably best I live in a small place or I would fill it with too many animals (wait, is that really a thing, too many??)
In 2021, I moved to Minnesota, and wow, does it ever get cold in winter! But I actually love it. I’m from a hot state, and I was starting to miss having seasons.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My novella is Stone Heart (Stone & Flame, book 1) and it came out in March 2025. It was actually inspired by my writing group. We twice had a discussion about “unhinged” romances, and I decided I would write one for them. It went from being a 5-7k entertainment for my writing friends to being a 37k novella. The plot just unfolded and the book practically wrote itself!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I always write on my laptop, sitting on the couch. I’m never going to be that writer in a coffee shop, it’s just far too noisy. I know a lot of people have that vision for writers, but it’s just not me. If I’m out in pubic, I’m people watching, not writing.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
When I was a kid, I devoured all the books I could get my hands on without having a favorite. In junior high, I discovered Stephen King & Dean Koontz. I expanded to fantasy and sci-fi.
My mom allowed me to read any book on her shelf, so I plowed through a lot of historical fiction like John Jakes, and mystery/suspense books by Phyllis Whitney.
What are you working on now?
A contemporary college/new adult romance and book 2 of Stone & Flame. I went a little off the wall and decided to write two books at the same time.
The college romance is an old story, and one of my first. I had shoved it in the “trunk” of things to go back to one day so here I am, back at the beginning! One thing I love about that is when I can see how much my writing skills have progressed from that early story.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I wish I had a best method! Marketing is absolutely the hardest part of writing and publishing a book. It’s the grind of promotion that can wear a writer down. We just want to write!
I do have some success at local/regional in-person events. They’re a lot of fun. I highly recommend trying a local SFF convention or bookish fest. Get to know your community.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read craft books, practice your skills, but remember that the things you read and the input you get from others boils down to this: Tools, not rules. You don’t have to take in every piece of advice or constructive criticism. Focus on 1-2 area of improvement at a time. Everyone can always improve – so never hit that point of thinking you can’t learn more or do a better job on the next story. Keep striving! Keep learning. Don’t get too full of yourself, but also believe enough in yourself to just get those words down on paper.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
There is more than one way to do something.
Don’t get stuck in the same old-same old of thinking you have to do it the same way over and over, or that you have to do it the way someone else does it. Try new things! Explore. Try a new way to wash your dishes. Look at folding your clothes in a different direction/fold. These sounds like silly simple things, but realizing that there is no ‘right’ way to do a task can actually be liberating and lead to more complex thinking.
What are you reading now?
I always have 2-3 books going at once. Right now: The Only Good Indian by Stephen Graham Jones, Lassiter by JR Ward, and Hook Shot by Kennedy Ryan.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I intend to keep working on these two books *AND* have them published this year. After that, I’ll continue working on a multi-book fantasy, and book 3 of my paranormal romance series, Stone & Flame. I’ll continue to study developmental editing as well.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving, 1984 by George Orwell, The Drawing of the Three by Stephen King, and the Daughter of the Empire trilogy by Janny Wurts and Raymond Feist.
