About Management & Leadership
Perhaps you’ve landed your first management position, or maybe you’re an experienced manager looking to up your game. Either way, you’ve come to the right place. This book can be your go-to guide for all things management, packed with practical techniques, valuable advice, and examples to help you navigate the exciting yet challenging world of being a manager or leader.
Throughout this book, we’ll look at some of the fundamental principles of management. We’ll explore what it really means to be a manager, the unique roles you’ll play, and the essential skills you need to excel in your position. We’ll also look at how to deal with some of the various challenges that managers face head-on, from building high-performing teams to managing change and everything in between.
I’ve been there myself, with more than 35 years of management experience, gained in small, medium and large organisations, both within the UK and Internationally. I’ve sat through, and sometimes endured, many different formats of management training courses and seminars, ranging from excellent to absolutely dreadful. Some have imparted valuable knowledge and wisdom, whilst others just ticked a box or two on a form somewhere.
I have managed small teams, large teams, remote teams, International teams, many different sizes of projects and multi-million pound budgets. I’ve recruited people, promoted people, dismissed people, investigated allegations, re-structured departments, written policies and procedures, dealt with real-life disasters and lived to tell the tale. I therefore know many of the hurdles that you’re likely to encounter along the way in your management career. That’s why I’m committed to equipping you with the tools and knowledge you need to succeed.
This book isn’t just a theoretical guide. It’s a practical resource filled with actionable strategies and useful tips that you can implement right away, coupled with a guide to some of the underpinning theories and principles which will help to strengthen and support your knowledge.
So, whether you’re a new manager stepping into the world of leadership or a seasoned professional seeking to enhance your management prowess, get ready for an exciting journey. Together, we’ll explore the art and science of effective management, empowering you to become the best manager you can be, and hopefully equip you to be one of those managers remembered for the right reasons.
