Interview With Author Mandy M. Roth
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve been writing for just over twenty years. My first book was published in 2004, and since then, I’ve published over 100 titles. Some with NY trad pubs, some with small presses, and some indie. I write paranormal romance books, sci-fi and fantasy books, paranormal women’s fiction books, and cozy mystery books.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Wind with a Chance of Wolfsbane. It was inspired by my love of gothic literature, urban fantasy, and romance books. I combined elements from each genre, creating a work of fiction that is geared at women 40 and over.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t think any of my habits are unusual, but you can set your watch by them. I like to have a tumbler of lemon water near me and music playing. I tend to have a good deal of reference books spread out near me, so I often work at a table. I even ended up going with a farmhouse table in my office in place of a desk.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’ve been heavily influenced by Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley, Jane Austen, Anne Rice, Clive Barker, Stephen King, Tolkien, and John Saul.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on the next book in my paranormal women’s fiction series, Grimm Cove. Like the others, this one has nods to gothic literature.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My mailing list is my number-one go-to for book promotions. I’ve been cultivating it since 2004, and it’s the one thing, outside of my website, that I’ve remained in control of. Social media platforms come and go. Often their rules of “engagement” change as well, which can throw a wrench into how you market, so I find it best to avoid using them as a main way to reach my reader base.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
If you’re worrying about a book failing so much that you stop writing the book, you are actually failing the book. So write it. Worry about everything else later.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
That someone else’s way of writing and doing things may not work for me, and that’s okay.
What are you reading now?
I’m reading Shannon Mayer’s newest book–Golden.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’ll be launching a new series this year which is big for me, seeing as how I have been writing in many of my series for nearly twenty years now.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Dracula, Frankenstein, The Fellowship of the Rings, and Interview with the Vampire.
