Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I studies Classics at Trinity College, Cambridge and then spent his working career in the financial services industry, principally in London. Now that I have the freedom to do what I want I spend part of my day reading, thinking and writing – or as my wife puts it, locking myself away for a few hours each day. I have a blog which has been going for 5 years which reflects my interests in the arts, books, history and anything quirky or idiosyncratic. I have published four books, two in my own right and two which I have co-authored.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is called Fifty Curious Questions and is my attempt to answer some of those irritating questions that nag away at your sub-conscious. I hope the reader comes away with a modicum of knowledge and a smile on their face.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not that I’m aware of. I tend to put one letter after another. It seems to work.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
My favourite books are George Eliot’s Middlemarch and Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South. I keep returning to Joseph Heller’s Catch 22 – there must be a joke in there somewhere.
What are you working on now?
My latest project has the working title of Fifty Scams and Hoaxes. It is a study in human gullibility and credulity and those that prey on those weaknesses.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Aside from Awesomegang, keep plugging away via social media, Goodreads and get some reviews.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Follow your dreams.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Become an undertaker. You will never be out of work.
What are you reading now?
A House for Mister Biswas by V S Naipaul
What’s next for you as a writer?
To improve my style.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would only need one – One Hundred and One Ways to escape a desert island. Not sure it has been written yet!
